The Oklahoma County Detention Center is proud to announce the first day of our partnership with Opportunities Industrialization Center (OIC) of Oklahoma County to provide GED classes for inmates. This week, 10 men and 10 women took their seats as the inaugural participants in this life-changing program.
Education is one of the most powerful tools for personal transformation. For many inmates, completing a GED is not just about earning a diploma—it’s about opening doors that were once closed. By pursuing their education, participants are taking a crucial step toward:
Employment opportunities after release
Higher education or vocational training pathways
Improved self-esteem and confidence
A stronger sense of purpose and hope for the future
The GED program benefits more than just the participants—it strengthens the entire community. When returning citizens leave with the tools to pursue meaningful work and stability, it reduces recidivism, increases public safety, and helps families and neighborhoods thrive.
The first day in class was filled with a mix of nervous energy and determination, but also hope. These 20 individuals are proving that it’s never too late to start again, and that investing in education can change the course of a life.
At OCDC, we believe in second chances and in building pathways to success. This GED program is a cornerstone of our ongoing commitment to reentry preparation, rehabilitation, and community impact.
