Facing the Storm: Embracing Transformation with Strength and Purpose

andreaknaus4

They say the bison is the only animal to turn into a storm and face it head-on. While other animals scatter and run for cover, the bison lowers its head, leans into the wind, and walks straight into the heart of the tempest. Why? Because by facing the storm, the bison shortens its duration. It doesn’t try to escape the inevitable — it confronts it.

Transformation is a lot like that storm. Change is hard. It’s uncomfortable. And sometimes it feels endless. But the bison teaches us that the fastest way through is not around — it’s through.

The Path of Transformation

Sometimes in the morning when I wake, I remember a distant dream — an icy dream. I’m back in that tempest with the ice bison, the visibility no more than a few yards. The winds howling through Yellowstone, my face stinging from the cold. It was isolating, almost surreal. Disconnected from the modern world, I remember wondering if I’d ever make it back.

And yet, the bison just stood there. Calm. Focused. Eyes locked forward as the storm raged. Not in fear — in resolve. It knew the storm wouldn’t last forever. It knew that on the other side, beneath the snow, the good grass was waiting.

We are all walking through our own storms — personal challenges, professional setbacks, cultural shifts. Transformation in a correctional setting is no different. We’ve embarked on a path of change, knowing that the process won’t be easy, and that progress will sometimes feel slow. But like the bison, we face it head-on, knowing the reward on the other side is worth the effort.

Strength in Professionalism, Respect, and Integrity

Change isn’t just about new policies or updated procedures — it’s about a mindset shift. It’s about fostering a culture of professionalism, where every action reflects our commitment to excellence. It’s about showing respect — not just for each other, but for the mission and the people we serve. And it’s about maintaining integrity even when no one is watching, knowing that the right path is often the hardest one to walk.

In an environment where security and safety are non-negotiable, operational excellence becomes the foundation of that transformation. Every system, every routine, every decision reflects that commitment. Just like the bison trusts its instincts to survive the storm, we trust our training, our values, and our team to carry us through the challenges we face.

Empowerment Through the Storm

The bison doesn’t wait for the storm to pass — it empowers itself by walking into it. That’s the mindset we embrace. We empower our staff with training, wellness support, and growth opportunities. We empower those in our care with educational programs, mental health support, and the tools for successful reentry, also partnering with community resources like Diversion Hub, TEEM and our newest partnership Urban League of OKC. Change isn’t about waiting for things to get better — it’s about building resilience so that we’re prepared to succeed no matter the storm.

Harvesting the Good Grass

The wheat in our logo symbolizes the reward — the growth, the outcome of hard work and perseverance. Just as the bison emerges from the storm with grass in its mouth, we aim to emerge from this period of transformation stronger, more united, and more capable than ever. The stars represent our guiding values — professionalism, respect, accountability, integrity, service, and empowerment — the constants that keep us aligned even when the storm clouds gather.

Progress may not always come as fast as we want it to. Some days it may feel like the storm will never end. But if we stay true to our values, face the challenges head-on, and lean into the wind together — just like the bison — we will emerge stronger. And the good grass will be there waiting.

Because transformation isn’t about speed — it’s about direction. And we’re walking the right way. We are Oklahoma County Detention Center and we are Transformation Through the Storm — Building Security, Safety, and Operational Excellence.
