County Jail Cadet Prevents Suicide Attempt

OKLAHOMA CITY (July 26, 2022) – On Monday, July 25, 2022, an alert Oklahoma County Jail cadet, who was working their first shift as an employee, helped save a detainee’s life. The cadet heard a detainee making suicidal statements. The cadet immediately radioed a supervisor, who advised the cadet to monitor the detainee while more officers responded. As they spoke, the detainee continued to threaten to harm themselves. A supervisor arrived and persuaded the detainee to calm down and allow staff to escort them without incident to the medical wing for a mental health evaluation. The medical staff placed the detainee on suicide prevention watch. “In this instance, the cadet was fully engaged with their duties. They saw a detainee in distress and took action to get the detainee desperately needed help,” said Greg Williams, Oklahoma County Detention Center CEO. “We commend the cadet and all of our employees who work very hard every day to provide the detainees with care and support.” About the Oklahoma County Criminal Justice Authority The Oklahoma County Criminal Justice Authority operates the Oklahoma County Detention Center.
