OCCJA REDUCES TRIPLE CELLS TO ZERO
OKLAHOMA CITY (Feb. 15, 2022) – The Oklahoma County Criminal Justice Authority announces the number of cells holding three inmates stands at zero. Since the OCCJA took over on July 1, 2022, one of the many goals is to eliminate what’s referred to as triple celling. The jail has 120 cells that meet state jail standards to hold three detainees. However, currently the jail is not housing more than two detainees per cell. This achievement impacts the overall safety and security of all detainees and staff. “Our goal since the beginning has been to make sure every detainee has a bunk. This is significant because it reduces stress on detainees and staff,” said Greg Williams, Oklahoma County Detention Center CEO. “Change does not happen overnight. The staff has worked tremendously hard to take this jail in a positive direction and make it a better place for detainees and staff alike.” The practice of triple celling detainees’ dates back several decades. Going forward, only in extreme cases will three detainees be housed together in the same cell.
